My given name is Dawn Lortie, and my Spirit name is Wasesgun, meaning “Ray of Light”. I am a proud First Nations woman from the Mistawasis Nêhiyawak First Nation, and have strong ties to Sagamok First Nation. Growing up, I learned the importance of living off the land and being close to nature, surrounded by the lakes of Northern Ontario. I have called Simcoe County home for the past forty years and raised my family here. After retiring from Indigenous child welfare, I wanted to keep supporting people seeking someone grounded to walk with them on their healing journey. I work with traditional medicines and my bundle to help others find answers within themselves in a counselling setting. Storytelling has always been a big part of my culture, and I feel honoured to have heard many people’s stories. My teachings guide me toward balance and harmony and will help those who want to do the same. I am proud to work with my daughter to leave a legacy of the fulfillment received from being a good helper.
